Private Rented Accommodation

Due to the shortage of social housing, very few people are successful in bidding for a social housing property and the private rented sector is a likely to be a speedier option to most people's rehousing.

Most councils operate schemes to assist people into the private rented sector. You may wish to contact the housing options team at the council you are registered with to find out if you are eligible for any assistance.

Why choose the private sector?

There are many reasons why some people choose to rent in the private rented sector. These include:

• flexibility to move to a particular location for jobs, schools or other local services.

• more choice in the type of property.

• a wider range of locations, include in areas you may not qualify for social housing.

• likely to be a much quicker housing option than bidding for social housing.

Where can I find private rented accommodation

There are many places you can look for private rented properties:

• Local newspapers and other publications

• Estate agents - you can use a website such as Zoopla to find estate agents close to where you live.

• Internet sites such as Zoopla and Rightmove.

Some people choose to share with other people or rent a room in a flat or house. This is usually a cheaper option and bills are often included in the price.

Popular sites for flat sharing or renting a room include SpareRoom, RoomBuddies and Flatmate Rooms
